Exemptions & appeals

Exemption filing

January 1–December 5, 2026 for the Smyth Tax Relief for the Elderly and Disabled application; late applications may be accepted through December 15 with Commissioner approval.

Senior relief

Smyth T.R.E.D. provides up to a $200 discount to an owner age 65+ or totally and permanently disabled who owns the home as of January 1, with household income not over $40,000 and net worth not over $100,000 excluding the primary residence and one acre.

Valuation limits

No general annual valuation cap verified. Smyth assesses real estate under Virginia fair-market-value rules; tax relief and qualifying land-use assessment are separate programs.
