Exemptions & appeals

Exemption filing

Tennessee has no general homestead property-tax exemption. For 2026, Knox County's official assessment calendar lists May 20 as the exemption deadline and March 15 as the Greenbelt deadline; file with the appropriate county office.

Senior relief

2026 Tennessee Property Tax Relief is available through the Knox County Trustee to qualifying low-income elderly and disabled homeowners, disabled veterans, and surviving spouses; it is a state reimbursement, not a general exemption. The official 2026 county tax-freeze limit is $51,670 standard and $63,470 local-option; Knox Trustee requires a primary residence, annual application, and supporting documentation.

Valuation limits

No general Tennessee individual assessed-value cap was verified. Knox County's official assessor states that 2026 is a countywide reappraisal year on a two-year cycle and that the certified tax rate is adjusted for revenue neutrality; Greenbelt and the senior tax-freeze program are separate protections.

For a valuation appeal, use the appeal date in the tax and filing section above. Keep your notice, supporting evidence, and proof of submission.
