Exemption filing

Tennessee has no general homeowner homestead exemption. For tax year 2026, first-time Greenbelt applications are due March 15, 2026; State Board of Equalization property-tax exemption applications are generally due May 20, 2026; and state Tax Relief/Tax Freeze applications are filed with the county Trustee. Senior relief

Smith County offers Tennessee Property Tax Relief and a county senior Property Tax Freeze for qualifying taxpayers age 65+ or permanently disabled, with separate disabled-veteran relief. Smith adopted the county freeze in 2008; the official 2026 county income limit is $40,950. Apply annually through the Trustee.

Valuation limits

No general Tennessee individual assessed-value cap was verified. Tennessee uses periodic reappraisal and certified-tax-rate/revenue-neutral rules; Greenbelt present-use valuation and any qualifying local senior Property Tax Freeze are separate protections.
