Exemptions & appeals
View exemption application (opens in a new tab)Exemption filing
Tennessee has no general homeowner homestead exemption. For tax year 2026, first-time Greenbelt applications are due March 15, 2026; State Board of Equalization property-tax exemption applications are due May 20, 2026; and state Tax Relief/Tax Freeze applications are filed with the county Trustee, generally by 35 days after the local tax delinquency date.
Senior relief
2026 Tennessee Property Tax Relief is available through the County Trustee to qualifying low-income elderly and disabled homeowners, disabled veterans, and surviving spouses; it is a state reimbursement, not a general exemption. The 2026 standard Property Tax Freeze income limit for Polk County is $38,470; the Comptroller's current county-participation list does not list Polk County as a countywide local-option freeze jurisdiction. Apply through the Trustee and confirm eligibility.
Valuation limits
No general Tennessee individual assessed-value cap was verified. The county is governed by Tennessee's periodic reappraisal and certified-tax-rate/revenue-neutral framework; Greenbelt present-use valuation and any qualifying senior Property Tax Freeze are separate protections.
For a valuation appeal, use the appeal date in the tax and filing section above. Keep your notice, supporting evidence, and proof of submission.
