Exemption filing

June 1, 2026; Halifax County states the North Carolina senior/permanently-disabled exclusion application must be filed with the Tax Department by June 1.

Senior relief

Halifax County's official exemption page describes the 2026 North Carolina senior/permanently-disabled exclusion: age 65+ or totally and permanently disabled, income no more than $38,800, and exclusion of the greater of $25,000 or 50% of the permanent residence assessed value; disabled-veteran and circuit-breaker programs are also available under state law.

Valuation limits

No general local annual parcel-value cap verified. North Carolina requires appraisal at true value in money and countywide reappraisal at least every eight years under N.C.G.S. §§105-283 and 105-286; present-use valuation and homestead relief programs reduce or defer taxable value but are not a general valuation cap.
