2026 fiscal calendar
Know the tax date before it becomes a penalty date.
Tax bills, payment rules, and valuation-review windows are controlled by the local jurisdiction and the governing state framework. The verified record below separates published figures from dates that require confirmation with Mackinac County Equalization Department and Mackinac County Treasurer.
Effective rate
Michigan property tax rates vary by local city, township, village, school district, and other taxing jurisdictions; no single countywide effective rate was published by the official source reviewed.
Statement mailing
the official county source reviewed does not publish a single countywide 2026 tax-bill mailing date; local units issue bills.
Payment deadline
2026 Michigan property-tax schedule: summer taxes are due September 14, 2026 unless a city charter provides a different date; late summer taxes accrue 1% monthly interest from September 15. Winter taxes are due and payable December 1, 2026, with the local unit/charter controlling the final penalty date. Unpaid 2025 taxes are returned to the county treasurer as delinquent on March 2, 2026 because March 1 is Sunday; the county adds a 4% administration fee and 1% monthly interest. Valuation protest
2026 assessment appeals are filed with the city or township Board of Review. The organizational meeting is March 3, 2026; appeal meetings begin March 9, 2026, with a permitted local alternative on March 10 or 11; the March Board must finish by April 6, 2026. A county-equalization appeal to the Michigan Tax Tribunal is generally due within 35 days after county adoption of the equalization report. Local meeting times and petition procedures vary.
Critical payment warning
Do not assume a grace period.
The verified county record identifies the payment timing above but does not establish a universal penalty schedule for this page. Late charges, interest, collection costs, tax-sale procedures, and lien or foreclosure timelines can depend on state law and the local collector’s process. If the deadline is close or a balance is delinquent, contact the tax collector directly and request the current payoff amount in writing.
Treat the published payment deadline as a hard operational date and retain your receipt or confirmation number.
Read the calendar in order
From assessment to collection
1. Valuation and notice
Review the assessment notice as soon as it arrives. The protest window may run from the notice date rather than from the payment due date.
2. Statement and account review
Match the tax statement to the parcel or account number and confirm exemptions, assessed value, taxing units, credits, and balance.
3. Payment confirmation
Use the official collector channel, then save the receipt, transaction reference, and date posted. A bank submission is not always the same as a county posting date.
